Educational Programs

Girls Incorporated® of Fort Smith offers an educational after-school program for “girls-only” ages 6-18. Most of the girls who participate are elementary-and junior high-aged girls. We offer programs on economic literacy, technology, science, math, media literacy, physical fitness, homework help (tutoring) and many other areas. We do not bring girls in and sit them down and teach like a school setting; we allow them to move and be involved and participate in their own learning.

Our school year program also provides opportunities for girls to participate when Fort Smith Public School is out for teacher conferences, teachers meetings, holiday break, spring break, and other times school is not in session. We are, however, closed during inclement weather along with Fort Smith Public Schools.

Summer Program

Girls Inc. provides educational programming during the summer months, 7:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. daily. Our programming schedule includes economic literacy, technology, science, math, media literacy, physically fitness, arts & crafts, cooking, community services opportunities, out-of-center trips, and other fun activities. We also have developed partnerships with First Tee, First Serve, and Western Arkansas Ballet to provide additional programs that the girls always enjoy.

After-School Program

A typical after-school program day looks like this:

Girls arrive and receive a snack.

3:30-4:00
Time is provided for homework help and any tutoring they might need.

4:15-5:15
Girls Inc. educational programming and additional homework help if needed.

5:15-6:00
Parents begin to pick girls up. While the girls are waiting, they participate in games, activities, and free play.

Friendly PEERsuasion

Girls Inc. Friendly PEERsuasion® builds girls' skills for resisting pressure to use harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, household chemicals and other drugs. The two-part substance abuse prevention program teaches girls ages 11 to 14 healthy ways to manage stress and confront peer, media, and other pressures. The girls then assume roles as PEERsuaders for younger girls.

Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy

Girls Inc. Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy® helps girls identify ways and reasons to avoid early pregnancy. The program fosters girls' communication skills, provides basic health education, and encourages girls to plan for the future through four age-appropriate components:

  • Growing TogetherSM
  • Will Power/Won't Power®
  • Taking Care of BusinessSM
  • Health BridgeSM

Media Literacy

Girls Inc. Media Literacy®encourages girls to think critically about media messages and fosters their awareness of the scope and power of the media and its effects on girls and women. Girls gain media literacy skills that enhance their ability to critically examine and advocate for change in entertainment, news, and advertising media.
